How to Control Childhood Obesity in Your Kids?

The bad news and the good news about childhood obesity is that it is your responsibility and as a parent you can control it too. With good lifestyle choices, proper balanced diet and a regular exercise you can keep your child fit and free from obesity. Parental involvement is the ultimate solution to prevent obesity in children or for childhood obesity treatment. If your child is obese or is on the verge of obesity, you can ask him/her to exercise with you or a supervisor to ensure optimum amount of exercise. You can also control more than 70% of what your child eats. You just need to plan out a lifestyle for your kid so that they don’t accumulate fat in the body.

Diagnosing Obesity in Children

The first step to control childhood obesity is to check whether your child is already obese or not. Consult a doctor who can diagnose obesity through infant growth charts for small kids and through body mass index (BMI) for teenagers. Babies usually look chubby, but if your baby looks unusually fat then it’s time for you to consult a medical practitioner. An infant growth chart is a useful tool to diagnose whether a child is obese or not. It compares the weight of your child with his/her height and age and compares it with infants across different countries.

You can yourself check whether your child is overweight or not through BMI calculators and your child’s growth chart percentile ratings that are easily available on the Internet. These easily accessible tools can help you to find out whether your child is just a few pounds overweight or extremely obese, without even paying a visit to the doctor.

Obesity Health Hazards

Timely childhood obesity treatment is essential to prevent a variety of obesity induced health conditions like gallstones, sleep disturbances, hypertension, lipid problems, asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, osteoporosis, liver problems, menstrual problems, and high cholesterol.

Steps to Control Obesity in Children

It is only in the hands of parents to control childhood obesity in their children. First you can start by controlling the amount of sweetened drinks like colas and fruit juices consumed by your child. Substitute their junk food diet with less oily health food. Schedule your child’s exercise time for about 40 to 60 minutes every day. This is what medical practitioners in America recommend as a part of childhood obesity treatment and prevention. Joining a social support group also helps you to deal with your child’s obesity problem.

Obesity in the Pacific

Obesity in the Pacific

$97.19

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Obesity in the Pacific is a growing health concern with health officials stating that it is one of the leading causes of preventable deaths in the Pacific Rim. According to Forbes, Pacific island nations and associated states make up the top seven on a 2007 list of fattest countries, and eight of the top ten. In all these cases, more than 70 of citizens aged 15 and over have an unhealthy weight. Reasons for this issue include mining operations that have left not much arable land; as a result, much of the local diet is of processed, imported food such as Spam or corned beef, rather than fresh fish, fruit and vegetables. In addition, cultural factors have been blamed, such as associating a large body size with wealth and power, or changing ways of living, with children leading more sedentary lives. The Stigma of Childhood Obesity: A Literature Review.

The Stigma of Childhood Obesity: A Literature Review.

$115.71

Research is consistent in demonstrating high prevalence rates of obesity for adult and child populations in the United States and around the world, and such rates continue to increase. While the physical heath consequences of obesity are well documented, potential mental health issues related to the obesity stigma are less well known. This review explores the stigma of childhood obesity in an effort to better understand the phenomenon. The research unambiguously indicates that Americans of all ages hold prejudicial attitudes and beliefs associated with obesity, and readily discriminate against those who are obese. Consequently, this review also discusses ways to prevent obesity, intervene with those children who are already obese, and aid children in managing obesity stigma. Clinical applications of obesity stigma research, as well as considerations for future research, are also proposed. Obesity, Vol. 8: The Obesity Survival Paradox

$24.51

Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems. Body mass index (BMI), a measurement which compares weight and height, defines people as overweight (preobese) when their BMI is between 25 kg/m2 and 30 kg/m2, and obese when it is greater than 30 kg/m2. The book is about reverse epidemiology, a term for a medical hypothesis which holds that obesity and high cholesterol may, counter intuitively, be protective and associated with greater survival in certain groups of people, such as very elderly individuals or those with certain chronic diseases. It postulates that normal to low body mass index or normal values of cholesterol may be detrimental and associated with higher mortality in asymptomatic people.Project Webster represents a new publishing paradigm, allowing disparate content sources to be curated into cohesive, relevant, and informative books. The Economics of Obesity

The Economics of Obesity

$196.13

Obesity, which has increased in most developed countries in the past few decades, is the result of genetics, environment, and individual choices. Economics is useful for studying the individual choices that lead to obesity, explanations for the recent rise in obesity, the treatment options for obesity, and the costs and consequences of obesity for the individual and society. The papers in this volume, devoted to the economics of obesity, illustrate the wide usefulness of the economic approach. The papers in the first section propose and test economic explanations for foodconsumption choices and obesity. In particular, they assess the impact of food quality, access to fast food, food prices, legislation, and other factors on diet, physical activity, and body weight. Treatments for obesity, specifically bariatric surgery and antiobesity drugs, are studied in the second section of this volume. The third section is devoted to the labor market impacts of obesity; evidence from fifteen countries is presented and evaluated. The fourth and final section calculates the impact of obesity on hospital costs and examines the externalities imposed by obesity through health insurance. Taken together, the papers in this volume advance the frontier of knowledge about the causes, implications, and consequences of obesity, and validate the usefulness of the economic approach for studying obesity in particular and medical conditions more generally. Abdominal Obesity

Abdominal Obesity

$70.1

Abdominal obesity, colloquially known as belly fat or clinically as central obesity, is the accumulation of abdominal fat resulting in an increase in waist size. There is a strong correlation between central obesity and cardiovascular disease. Visceral fat, also known as organ fat or intraabdominal fat, is located inside the peritoneal cavity, packed in between internal organs and torso, as opposed to subcutaneous fat which is found underneath the skin, and intramuscular fat which is found interspersed in skeletal muscle. Visceral fat is composed of several adipose depots including mesenteric, epididymal white adipose tissue (EWAT) and perirenal fat. An excess of visceral fat is known as central obesity, the pot belly or beer belly effect, in which the abdomen protrudes excessively. This body type is also known as apple shaped, as opposed to pear shaped, in which fat is deposited on the hips and buttocks. Children’s Exodus

$19.99

In the months leading up to the outbreak of World War Two, Britain rushed to evacuate nearly 10,000 Jewish children from the Nazi occupied territories. ChildrenÂ’s Exodus offers an in-depth look at the people and politics behind the various chains of rescue as well as the personal narratives of the children who left everything behind in the hope of finding safety. Drawing on unpublished interviews, journals, and articles, Vera K. Fast examines the religious and political tensions that emerged throughout the migration and at times threatened to bring operations to a halt. ChildrenÂ’s Exodus captures the life-affirming stories of child refugees with vivid detail and examines the motivations — religious or otherwise — of the people that orchestrated one of the greatest rescue missions of all time.

The Economic Causes and Consequences of Obesity

The Economic Causes and Consequences of Obesity

$151.35

Rising worldwide obesity rates have generated massive amounts of policy concern and public interest. In this book, we use two household surveys (British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) and Household and Income Dynamics of Australia (HILDA)) to empirically analyse: 1) the relationship between obesity and economic incentives that influence individual and household behaviour; 2) the role of the environment and economic incentives on discretionary activities which directly impact the likelihood of being obese, such as physical activity; and 3) the impact of obesity on labour market outcomes. Responding to Obesity in Primary Care

Responding to Obesity in Primary Care

$98.77

Obesity is one of the most important public health problems of our time and prevalence has tripled in the past two decades. The term globesity has been coined to highlight the global and epidemic nature of this problem and calls for a concerted public health approach to support the efforts of individuals in making healthier lifestyle choices. A range of national policies in the UK have emphasised the need to tackle obesity and highlight primary care as the appropriate setting for measures in this direction. However, the increasing expectations to perform preventative as well as treatment roles puts great demand on primary care. There are many constraints financial, time, ethical, personnel and most important of all, the attitudes and perceptions of the health professionals towards obesity management. In the absence of motivation and enthusiasm on part of the effector arm, local policies are unlikely to reflect and respond to this issue. We conducted a study to try and understand the current state of obesity management in primary care and to explore the views of primary care professionals towards obesity prevention and treatment. Cytokine and Leptin Signaling in Obesity.

Cytokine and Leptin Signaling in Obesity.

$115.71

Obesity is characterized by multiple changes including expanded white adipose tissue (WAT) 1, 2]. During the last decade, WAT has been recognized as an active endocrine organ and a source of many proinflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and other proteins collectively called adipokines 35]. Since many of these adipokines have been shown to be involved in inflammation, obesity is now increasingly recognized as a low grade chronic inflammatory state 59]. We have shown that IL1beta deficient mice on a mixed 129Sv/C57B1/6 background display an obese phenotype, whereas interleukin1 type I receptor deficient mice on the same background do not become obese. We have also shown that EP3R prostaglanoid receptor deficient mice on a C57B1/6 background exhibit an obese phenotype, with increased food intake during the light cycle, but not during the dark cycle of the diurnal rhythm. Finally, we have characterized a transgenic mouse model of obesity lacking all known leptin receptor isoforms. These transgenic business class mice exhibit an obese phenotype, altered glucose metabolism, and elevated plasma levels of leptin, insulin, and interleukin1 receptor antagonist. Collectively, these mouse models of obesity can be used to further characterize obesity as a chronic inflammatory state. Author: Brownell, Sara E. Obesity Management in Family Practice

Obesity Management in Family Practice

$71.6

This book empowers the physician to effectively care for a chronic recurrent disease that until now has often gone untreated in the primary care setting. Most obesity treatment texts are written by obesity experts without family practice experience. This disconnect has resulted in books that have little feasible application for family physicians. Dr. McKnighta (TM)s text takes the current evidencebased science and transforms treating obesity into a practical, timesensitive process that is supported by logical recommendations that every family physician can use to help obese patients. With guidelines backed by the best scientific data, the book is about application, not just theory. The reader is given the commonsense tools that patients need in order to have ownership of their disease. Ultimately, patients are empowered to control their weight, resulting in positive interaction between providers and patients. Author: McKnight, Thomas L. Correlates of Body Mass Index in Children

Correlates of Body Mass Index in Children

$113.11

This book is about a study that involved a crosssectional examination of a group of 3rd graders to determine if correlates of child body mass index (BMI) existed. Children from the Jefferson County, Alabama area were recruited as a result of their participation in the Hi5+ dietary intervention project. The results from the study indicate that the prevalence of overweight children is high in this cohort. In addition, it appears that there are several predictors of child BMI in this group of children, including certain portions of the diet as well as several psychosocial variables. It is apparent that in light of the current obesity epidemic, determining potential correlates of increased child BMI is extremely important.
